Q&A with BostonGlobe.com’s Design and Dev Firms
These days, I’m all about the responsive web design. Check out my latest two responsive sites, sparksheet.com and apex.sparksheet.com. Just this week, the Boston Globe‘s fresh redesign was launched, led by Ethan Marcotte, who coined the term and wrote an awesome book about it. As far as I know, this newspaper site is the biggest application of the technique thus far.
The process of designing a responsive site is a lot different than what we might be used to. It really needs the iterative approach and live prototypes to work with. I think this type of design puts a definitive end to the “should designers know how to code?” debate. If you don’t know how it works at its core, there’s no way you can make something good.
I know first-hand how this totally upends the web workflow (something that kind of happens anyway if you know how to design with code). It will be very interesting to see the tools and tricks that arise as bigger projects take on the challenge.
